Smelling Rosemary may improve memory, according to a small study by the University of Northumbria in England.  Researchers say their findings may have implications for treating people with memory problems in the future.  It works by inhaling or diffusing Rosemary and its volatile compounds (e.g. terpenes) may enter the blood stream by way of the nasal or lung mucosa. Terpenes are small organic molecules which can easily cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore may have direct effects in the brain by acting on receptor sites or enzyme systems.  Terpenes are primary components of essential oils and are often strong smelling.

These recipes may help enhance concentration and memory retention. Within aromatherapy, Rosemary Essential Oil is generally regarded as the oil to use for memory and concentration.  Lemon, Cypress and Peppermint essential oils can also be helpful in staying focused and alert.
